Lights, Camera, Climate Action: How Hollywood is Taking Center Stage in the Fight Against Climate Change

The entertainment industry has long been viewed as a space for escapism from reality, but in recent years, Hollywood has taken on a more serious role in driving awareness about climate change. From celebrities using their platforms to impact change to TV shows and films addressing the issue head-on, climate change has become a central theme in Hollywood.

One of the biggest Hollywood environmental movements to date is the Green Carpet Challenge, which sees stars wearing eco-friendly fashion on the red carpet to raise awareness of sustainable fashion. This movement started in 2009 when actress Livia Firth launched the initiative to make fashion more ethical and sustainable. Since then, Hollywood celebrities have made it a point to show off sustainable designs, with the most prominent being the 2020 Golden Globes where actress Joaquin Phoenix wore an all-black tuxedo made entirely of sustainable materials.

In addition to fashion, Hollywood is leveraging the power of film to impact change. From «An Inconvenient Truth» to «Before the Flood,» Hollywood has consistently churned out films that focus on the effects of climate change. Even shows such as the Emmy-award-winning HBO series, «Chernobyl,» touch on environmentalism and the importance of taking action to prevent disasters.

Hollywood stars themselves have also taken on the cause and made it their mission to raise awareness about climate change. Leonardo DiCaprio, for instance, has made it his life’s work to protect the planet. In addition to adopting a plant-based diet and driving an electric car, DiCaprio also founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation that works to protect wildlife and conserve ecosystems.

While the entertainment industry alone cannot solve climate change, its influence on popular culture is undeniable. Hollywood has the ability to shape opinions and inspire change, and with the amount of attention celebrities and their causes receive, the entertainment industry can be a powerful force in driving awareness and action towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
