The world is currently at a crossroads when it comes to the issue of opening borders. On one hand, globalisation has brought people of different cultures closer, increasing the need for open borders. On the other hand, there has been a rise in populist nationalism, particularly in developed countries, that sees open borders as a threat to national identity and security. However, despite this opposition, some countries have taken bold steps towards inclusive societies and global unity.
One such country is Canada. In 2015, the Canadian government announced its intention to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees. While some questioned the country’s ability to absorb such a large number of refugees, Canada quickly demonstrated its capacity to integrate refugees into its society. The government provided funding for language training, employment support and healthcare services. The refugees were welcomed by Canadians with open arms, and they have contributed to the country’s economy and social fabric.
Similarly, Germany opened its borders to over a million refugees in 2015 and 2016. This move was not without its challenges, as the country struggled to integrate the refugees into its society. However, Germany recognised the moral obligation to help those fleeing war and persecution. The country provided language training and vocational training opportunities to assist refugees in accessing employment, healthcare and housing.
Opening borders is not just limited to refugee resettlement. Singapore, for example, has implemented a progressive immigration policy to attract skilled immigrants from around the world. This policy aims to address the country’s ageing population and the need for skilled workers. Singapore provides support to immigrants to enable them to integrate into its society. This includes language and cultural training, career development, and housing and healthcare support.
The benefits of opening borders are clear. It can help create more diverse and dynamic societies, promote economic growth and address labour shortages. However, it requires a willingness to embrace change and a commitment to investing in social and economic integration. Those countries that have taken bold steps to open their borders have demonstrated the capacity for growth and success.
In a world that is becoming more interconnected every day, opening borders is a bold move towards inclusion, compassion and global unity. By working together, we can create societies that are more diverse, prosperous and resilient.
