In today’s political climate, the necessity of reviving democracy has never been more apparent. With polarization seemingly at an all-time high, and partisan factions pulling against one another, it is difficult to discern any consensus on any topic. However, with the rise of independent politicians and their impact on local and national elections, there is hope that the future of politics may be more moderate, pragmatic, and – above all – democratic.
Independents, or candidates who run outside the two major political parties, have increasingly made their mark in recent years. In recent years, campaigns like Bernie Sanders’ and Donald Trump’s have shown that «outsiders» can attract significant numbers of voters who do not align with the usual Democratic or Republican stance. Notably, these outsiders’ messages often resonate more with independent voters’ values, who generally express dissatisfaction with the political status quo.
One of the reasons for this growing trend, many argue, is that voters have become increasingly disillusioned with politicians that are beholden to their respective party establishments. Independents, on the other hand, have no such restrictions imposed on them, allowing them to pursue the issues that matter most to their constituents. This freedom has resulted in a willingness to collaborate on policies that protect the public interest.
As a result, independent politicians have the potential to be powerful agents of change. They offer voters a new, more authentic alternative to career politicians. This new breed of politician is not promising a utopia – but instead, the concept of good governance, the need to emphasize objectivity over ideology, and to think in terms of compromise rather than partisan advantage.
While politics may be more accessible to independents now than ever before, it is still an uphill battle to gain recognition and credits in the political landscape. A significant advantage that independent politicians have is that they can’t be pigeonholed into a partisan mold and to some extent this can transcend traditional-issue divides.
The need for independent politicians and their messages have never been more crucial than in this polarized political climate. In times like these, democracy needs to be revitalized, and independent politicians represent an opportunity to move towards more inclusive, moderate, and common sense politics. While it may be too early to know whether this trend will continue and gain traction, the strength of the independent movement persists, representing a bright spot in a seemingly dim political landscape.
